How Film Producers Get The Movie Made

Movie making is not for the faint of heart, nor is it for the pig-headed. Making the movie is the objective and doing it easily is not an option. It's important that no route be unexplored in the journey of getting this film made. Don't shortchange the movie by quitting when it's no longer easy and don't limit the creative ways in which you can get to a finished feature.

It's simple to make a movie, but not easy.

Find And Keep Good People

There are certain tasks that need to be done for a film to get made. You can decide what those tasks are and how precisely they contribute to the filmmaking process. A script might need to be written, that requires a writer. There are characters in this story that need to be played by people, you'll have to find actors. A camera needs to be pointed and focused on actors in some location where they will act out parts of the script, you must find somebody to run that camera.

Learn What You Can't Hire, Teach Others

You may be in a position where you can't find anybody to competently do the tasks you need done to make this movie. Since you are determined to get this film made you will have no other choice but to learn how to do it and teach someone what you've learned. It's difficult to do everything yourself and some people don't have the money or wherewithal to be able to educate themselves. You can take the idealist stance that everyone should be able to educate themselves and it's not your job to teach them these skills, but while you do that your movie won't get any closer to completion.

Take Open Positions Yourself

For some positions you may not only be unable to find a skilled person to perform a task, you might be unable to find anybody at all. Instead of being the one to learn a task and teach another how to do it, you will have to be that person. You may have gotten into producing to just make a movie you can act in or to make a movie you can direct, but you won't have any movie at all if you aren't also willing to carry out all sorts of other duties. A movie takes input from many different disciplines and if you can't find people to represent those disciplines you will need to fill those shoes. You may not be good at it or even want to do it next time if possible, but if you don't do it now you will have no movie and no next time.

Making a movie is a straightforward process on paper, but not easy to execute in real life. It's a matter of corralling the various persons needed to do certain things that together will make a feature film. Some of these people will need a little help getting there and some of these people will have to be you. Instead of not taking the time to learn a craft that will help your movie, you can just wait around. Both takes lots of time, but why not put effort towards making dreams come true instead of just hoping?
